5 Recommended Public Bathhouses in Okinawa
Nakanoyu
Known as the "southernmost public bathhouse in Japan," Nakanoyu is located in Ageda, Okinawa City, and is the only traditional public bathhouse left in Okinawa Prefecture. Established around 1960, its greatest feature is that it provides heated mineral spring water pumped from 350 meters underground. In Okinawa, public bathhouses are called "yu-furuya," and this is a rare place where you can experience that culture exactly as it was. It has a simple design with a single oval bathtub, and the open layout without a partition between the changing room and the bathing area is the quintessential Okinawan style. The "yuntaku" (chatting) with regular customers is a real highlight of the experience, allowing you to touch the warmth of the local people. The admission fee is a reasonable 370 yen for adults, and it is becoming known through word-of-mouth as a hidden gem for Okinawa travelers. Stop by during your sightseeing to get a taste of Okinawa’s retro bathhouse culture.
