This is a compact and lightweight EF lens with a 50mm standard angle of view, close to human vision, and a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. Canon's unique optical design technology employs a coating suitable for digital camera photography. In addition, by changing the aperture from 5 blades to 7 circular blades, it is possible to create beautiful circular bokeh in the background.

When mounted on an EOS series camera equipped with an APS-C size CMOS sensor, the focal length image is equivalent to approximately 80mm in 35mm format, making it ideal for portrait photography.

Quieter AF drive and improved operability compared to previous models

By adopting a gear-type stepping motor (STM), quieter AF drive has been achieved compared to previous models. In addition, it is equipped with a full-time manual focus* mechanism that allows manual focus even after AF lock while in AF mode. It also achieves a minimum focusing distance of 35cm and a maximum magnification of 0.21x, allowing for closer-up shots than previous models, thereby expanding the range of visual expression and improving operability.
