12 Recommended Day Trip Onsens at Lake Toya, Categorized by Purpose and Features
https://myjapanshoptokyo.com
Lake Toya, located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, is a caldera lake formed by a volcanic eruption in ancient times. In the center of the lake is Nakajima, an island formed by repeated eruptions in the distant past, and to the south of Lake Toya is Mount Usu, an active volcano that continues to erupt today. Magma circulating underground heats the abundant groundwater at the foot of Mount Usu, which then erupts as hot springs. The hot springs that gushed forth from the eruption of Mount Usu in 1910 are now Lake Toya Onsen. In 1917, an onsen ryokan opened, and from there, the hot spring town was formed.
Toya Lake Town is an onsen resort where you can easily enjoy day trips to hot springs, as well as overnight stays. It is about 2-3 hours by car or JR from Sapporo city, and 1.5-2 hours from New Chitose Airport.

Lake Toya Onsen Hot Spring Quality
There are 12 source wells at Lake Toya Onsen, drawing water from depths of 60 to 150 meters. In 2000, Mount Usu erupted again after 23 years. The volcanic smoke reached up to 3,500 meters, instantly transforming the hot spring town at its base into a city of ash, causing immense damage.
However, after that eruption, the amount of hot spring water gushing forth dramatically increased, and the water changed to a faint brownish color, becoming even more potent in its efficacy.
The spring quality is sodium-calcium-chloride spring, and it is said to be effective for rheumatism, neuralgia, women's diseases, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, skin diseases, and gastrointestinal diseases.
Chloride springs are relatively common in Japan.Their main component is salt, so they taste salty when consumed, and if the salt concentration is high or there is a lot of magnesium, they taste bitter.

Day Trip Hot Springs with Retro Charm
Lake Toya Onsen is a rare hot spring in Japan where its "birthdate" is known. While it has over 110 years of history since its opening in 1910, it can be considered a relatively new hot spring area in Japan.
It became known as a recuperation spot for wounded soldiers during the Russo-Japanese War, which led to the formation of the current hot spring town with inns and souvenir shops. Even today, there are many inns that offer a nostalgic hot spring atmosphere.

Both the male and female communal baths on the first basement floor and first floor offer views of Lake Toya from large windows. There are also a garden open-air bath and an observatory open-air bath, allowing you to enjoy bathing while gazing at the panoramic view of the lake.
This hotel's recommendation is the "Cave Bath," which has a secret hot spring atmosphere. It is built like a real cave, and the slightly dim lighting adds to the perfect ambiance.

Day Trip Hot Springs Satisfying Even Onsen Connoisseurs
Lake Toya Onsen is a sodium-calcium-chloride spring, which has the effect of softening the skin's surface. By washing away dirt and excess sebum from the skin, it makes the skin smooth, hence it is also called "beauty skin hot spring."
In addition, it has excellent heat retention properties, so you'll feel warm even after getting out of the bath, which is a nice bonus.
Toya Ikoinoyu
This day-trip hot spring facility is located on the north shore of the lake, across from the Lake Toya hot spring town. It's an old-fashioned hot spring facility beloved by locals and campers alike, with a simple structure consisting only of a bath and a rest area, but it's cherished as a place of "relaxation" in the true sense of the word.
There is no open-air bath, but since it's located on a hill, the view of Lake Toya from the bath and rest area is spectacular. The bath has large windows and a spacious tub, making for a comfortable bathing experience.

Yutorelo Toyako
This hot spring inn offers a luxurious flow of natural hot spring water. The pH level of the hot spring water is similar to that of a toner, making it a "beauty skin hot spring" that is gentle on the skin. The large public bath here also has a system where the water is completely replaced approximately every two hours, which is another appealing feature for enjoying fresh hot spring water. Hot springs are sometimes called "living things." After gushing from the source, the components oxidize and the hot spring "ages" as it is exposed to the air over time. Therefore, enjoying "new" hot water is a valuable experience!
There are two large public baths here: "Toshin-no-Yu" and "Shimizu-no-Yu." Of course, there are also open-air baths.

Hot Springs to Enjoy Briefly While Sightseeing
If you don't have enough time for a long soak but want to stop by on your way home from a drive, a footbath spot is highly recommended.
We will introduce a spot where you can warm your body with the effects of hot springs, even during a short break, such as after a meal or while buying souvenirs.
Footbath Pocket Park "Yakushi no Yu"
This is a town-operated footbath spot located one street away from the hot spring town, on the lake side. It's very close to the dining area, so after enjoying a meal, it's recommended to enjoy a footbath here before departing.
The feet are sometimes called the "second heart." By warming the feet, which are the extremities of the body, warm blood is returned to the heart, efficiently warming the entire body.

Since this hand bath is directly supplied from the main hot spring pipe that runs just beneath the sidewalk, you can enjoy the hot spring water straight from the source, which is also an attractive feature.
